After being mined, fuller’s earth is transported to the processing plant, crushed, ground, and stockpiled. Before drying, fuller’s earth is fed into secondary grinders to reduce further the size of the material. At some plants, the crushed material is fed into a pug mill, mixed with water, and extruded to improve the properties needed for certain end products.

The material then is dried in rotary or fluid bed dryers fired with natural gas or fuel oil. Drying reduces the moisture content to 0 to 10 percent from its initial moisture content of 40 to 50 percent.

The fullers earth material from conventional crushing and screening operations is subject to coarse and fine grinding primarily in roller mills or ball mills to reduce the material to the necessary product size range. A classifier is used to size the ground material and return oversized material that can be pulverized using either wet or dry processes. The classifier can either be associated with the grinding operation, or it can be a standalone process unit.
